Spring Break Checklist:
- live like a rock star.
- party like a rock star.
- do it all in just one week.
LA may seem to those who live there like just another day in "paradise," but for those who visit it is mixture of the strange, busy, and extravagant lifestyle that many people claim make it an interesting and desirable place to go. The paradise oasis might just be that people come here from all over the world to strike it rich with their high hopes of fame and fortune, but the harsh truth is that stars are a dime a dozen in LA. Some might not share in the fame and fortune dream, and for these people LA might be a little harder to digest than those easily persuaded by the grandeur of the place.
LA is known for causing a quake, earthquakes that is. The City lies on the San Andreas Fault, whichis known to get a little shaky from time to time, but no worries, there is a low likelihood that many earthquakes will occur during your vacation. Really.
Los Angeles is not a one-stop destination like many other maneuverable cities. The attractions that you will be most interested in are spread out over miles, and those who don't have a car will be hugely disappointed. The system of highways and freeways to get to these destinations are so confusing you might just want to skip on the car and stay in just one place in the city. The benefit of knowing what sites you have to see before you get there is not only important but probably the most crucial aspect of your trip. When choosing between all of these places the most difficult will be deciding how to sort through all of the places to go.
To aid your decision making process, let me just tell you about the beaches in southern California that are well known and worth checking out. What about Venice Beach? It is everything you've seen in the movies and more, a smorgasbord of people, performers, musicians, fitness freaks and everything else in between. Years ago Venice Beach was named "Playland of the Pacific" and it still lives up to this title. This beach is a must-see to people watch, do a little shopping and grab some food.
Beach bumin' at Santa Monica shouldn't be hard. The beach is the most lively on the hottest days but if the weather isn't so hot, the main strip of Santa Monica usually is. The 3rd Street Promenade is a pedestrian mall with shopping, bars, cafes, stores and movie theaters. You can also check out the Santa Monica pier, the oldest pleasure pier on the West Coast; it's packed with carnival attractions and good seafood eats.
Most beaches in LA are sparsely populated and largely polluted. If you want the beautiful people and things to do stick to the beaches that are well-known, then the next on the list is Malibu. The throbbing men and women of Baywatch made LA beaches famous, and Malibu definitely lives up to a typical Southern California beach with all the fixins.
The city is spread out and so are the attractions, thus the nightlife will be a trek to find. It is hard to walk anywhere, so forget about bar hopping. Hot nightclubs are located all over the city; same for the swank bars that just maybe you will see one of the Osbournes in or another somewhat famous person.
But if you want to leave the money, fame and alcohol behind, visit the happiest place on earth: Disneyland. A short drive and voila, there you are at Uncle Walt's first creation in the world domination of amusement parks. The greatest place on earth might be a little too crowded and wimpy for the avid roller coaster fanatic, so hit up Knotts Berry Farm, 4 miles north of Disneyland, or Six Flags Magic Mountain, a true testament to real amusement parks with over 100 rides. Magic Mountain is only an hour's drive north, so don't forget this stop on your pursuit for the best coaster park.
Livin' large in LA is easy. There are many things to see and do, as you can see from above. Make sure you have the cash flow to actually live like the rock star (keeping in mind we are college students) that we wish we could be.
