If you cannot guess what two words are on the minds of every college student from March to April, then read no further. For the adventurous at heart and true thrill seekers Spring Break is the week of fun and sun many college students opt to partake in. This weeklong break has taken us college students hard hours of studying, test-taking and enduring the long winter to finally allow us to cut loose in many locations all over the globe. The disease is school, and the cure is Spring Break. If fun is what you are looking for and a break from the ordinary, then look no further, Mexico is one of the most popular destinations because of the sun, beaches and tons of things to do.
If Mexico is already your destination of choice there are a few things to keep in mind while visiting. For the collegiate looking for the optimal time to begin their travels, keep in mind that October through May is the ideal weather to visit Mexico. One must also plan ahead; these dates are highly popular with tourists and especially close to the Easter holiday. For the best possible locations make your reservations early. If you are concerned about visiting Mexico during Easter, it could be a blessing in disguise. The religious culture in Mexico is very dominant and is shown through celebrations, festivals and cultural events, and these events would only add to the time you spend there.
English is commonly spoken across the country and you will only find it hard to communicate if you venture off the beaten path and into the rural landscape of Mexico. If that is not in the cards for your Spring Break, Mexico caters to the American student looking for a home away from home for one short week of the year.
Mexico on a budget is completely feasible. Average meals cost anywhere from $2 to $10. Rarely would you spend more than $10 for a meal. Tourist areas are highly populated by student travelers and prices all over Mexico cater to those on a budget. The cost of living while there will run about $20 to $70 per night. This is about mid-range for hotels, but it is possible to spend more than that. For those who want to do everything and see it all, budget your food and living expenses so that you will have money to do the fun things, even if that means giving up the hotel suite. Remember, students are not strangers to living on a budget! We are used to eating top ramen in times of need.
It is very common in tourist areas to find restaurants and bars that accept American money. It is recommended that if you do visit one of these locations, to bring American money with you and convert to pesos (the Mexican currency) while there. It is easy to convert money while in Mexico; you can even use your ATM card to get pesos from the machines. Most times the directions are in both English and Spanish. Credit cards and travelers checks are accepted many places, mostly by airlines, car rental companies and more expensive hotels and restaurants. Unfortunately crime is high throughout Mexico, so be extremely careful of credit card fraud or theft. It is recommended to bring a credit card, or an extra credit card, for emergency situations.
Make sure that you keep valuables locked in a safe in the hotel, including your credit cards, passport, traveler's checks, etc. Most hotels offer this service, and it is a fail-proof way to avoid any disasters while traveling abroad.
Don't let a couple of cautions make you think that visiting this country won't have its share of good times, though. Mexico boasts an ample number of activities, for the tame-of-heart traveler or the all-out bang-for-your-buck student. Depending on what region of the country you are in, these are some of the activities that you can find: fishing, deep-sea diving, snorkeling, bungee jumping, parasailing, skydiving, surfing, white water rafting, shopping, mountain climbing, treks through rain forests and ancient ruins, island-hopping, cruises, tanning on the beach, bars and nightclubs (just to name a few). These are some of the activities that draw student travelers from across the globe, to cram into one week of pure fun.
Mexico is an all-encompassing location that is agreeable to all students from the thrifty spender to the adventure seeker. It is a highly sought after destination because of the beautiful weather, lush landscapes, gorgeous beaches and endless outdoor activities. There is a little of everything for everyone and everything else in between.
