For people who define Los Angeles as plastic and New York as brassy, then San Francisco is the missing link of alternative chic and laid-back modernism that neither LA nor New York can provide to its visitors. Even people who hate big cities always seem to fall in love with San Francisco.

There is never a wrong time to travel San Francisco. As one of my personal favorite locations I suggest that whenever you can afford it, do it. San Francisco is known for its unpredictable weather. In the dead of summer the city could be fogged in and cold, while inland and around the California coast will be hot and dry. Pack for an array of weathers, and especially bring warm clothes whenever you go.

Most people know San Francisco not for the weather but the amazing array of sights and sounds. San Francisco was created on a landscape of hills that gives the city originality, but also a skill of difficulty when trying to park or even walk. What’s fortunate is that you can walk the city. Having a car is not essential while visiting because of the proximity of most things you will want to do, but if you feel you really can’t part without a car, don’t complain when it takes you hours to find a parking spot or even worse, pay lots of money to park somewhere in the city.

With these details aside, the attractions that bring tourist into the city and keep its residents blissfully happy cannot be ignored. San Francisco is divided into many different districts that will give you a worldly feel when visiting all of them. There is Chinatown, the Mission district, Castro, SoMa (south of Market Street), Financial District, Haight-Ashbury, Nob Hill, North Beach, Fisherman’s Warf, Richmond, the Marina, Downtown and the Tenderloin. I am sure there are a few forgotten here, but these are the main districts to be aware of when traveling about.

If you want the old world-style and a San Francisco trademark, you can stop by Market Street and ride the famous Cable Cars. If that is not your thing, there is plenty of consumerism (shopping) to do at Market Street as well. Union Square is, you guessed it, more shopping. This is the downtown area of San Francisco; high class and high rise buildings are abundant. Nob Hill is swanky while the Tenderloin district is an up-and-coming place to be. North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf is the stomping grounds of all great tourists with its array of bars, cafes and restaurants. SoMa begins the fun at night with a handful of clubs that integrates into the Mission district. The Mission district is home to the city’s Latino quarter, then it’s off to the Castro district which is the center for gay life in the city.

If you want to get high in San Francisco it is as simple as visiting one of the city’s most famous landmarks, the Coit Tower. Located on Telegraph Hill, this tower is the prime place for a 360-degree view of the city. And who could visit San Francisco without seeing some of the other very famous landmarks like Lombard Street and Alcatraz?

Lombard Street is the windiest road in the world and a great place to take pictures if you get a chance to see this Guinness Book of World Records site. The infamous Alcatraz Island was supposed to be the inescapable prison from 1933 to 1963, but people who did escape would probably argue with that statement. Al Capone and ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly were some of its most legendary prisoners.

For cultural events held annually in the city during April you can check out the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown. It celebrates Japanese culture including martial arts displays, tea ceremonies and others. The International Film Festival is held in the city every year in April and is also the oldest in the US.

If these locations are a little too busy there are numerous other cafes, bookstores, record shops, music concerts, sporting events and parks to see. San Francisco is a place of all ages and interests. If you just want to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge or go to one of the many bars and restaurants, there is something for you here. San Francisco is the joy of visiting a big city with hip vibe and relaxed atmosphere.
